Bike and Pedestrian Workshop for bike routes from Wellfleet to Provincetown. Bob Donahoe attended on 10/28. This is still exploratory, as nothing is funded. Clay Schofield, professional engineer from CC Commission was the main presenter. Some items discussed were:
Wellfleet now has a Bikeways Committee.
Unified signage throughout the Outer Cape.
A bike shuttle bus will begin in the spring with 14 bikes carried on a rear trailer. This is an effort to solve problem of cyclists not being able to get on the bus.
It is legal to ride in both directions on Commercial Street in Provincetown.
Encourage biking as mode of transportation.
Sticker offices in each town good site for distributing info.
Truro PD suggested pushing bike rodeos for kids; they have done this successfully in the past.
Problem of cell phone use distracting drivers.
The Chair received a letter from Chief Kulhawik regarding danger in the tunnel on the CCRT. The Chief spoke with Craig Thatcher, Acting Head Ranger at CCNS who has researched the warning lights at the tunnels on the Province Lands bike trail. They both have blinking yellow lights installed as a warning. Ranger Thatcher will get additional information from a park employee who was involved in the design of the Eastham tunnel. Bob will go to the Province Lands trail to observe the lights then reply to the Chief.
AmeriCorps Application will be submitted after Christmas.
Committee Meeting time. Judy reported that second and fourth Wednesdays at 5PM do not conflict with other town committee meetings. It was moved by Carol Dobek and seconded by Paul Schofield that beginning December, 2011, Bikeways Committee meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 5 pm. Motion was passed unanimously.
New Business
Paul Schofield reported that he encountered riders who did not speak English, as they were riding on the LEFT side of the rail trail. He was unable to communicate with them to suggest that it was dangerous to ride in that manner. Paul asked if we could provide a notice to the bike shops in several foreign languages indicating that riders should keep to the right. The consensus was that this would be a good idea; Paul will take this on and report back.
The Committee will meet next on 14 December 2011 at 5 PM.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 AM.
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Parmelee, Clerk
